Since its establishment in 1978, the Department of Marathi has been one of the oldest and most prestigious departments of the college. The primary objective of the department is to prepare students, especially from rural areas, for an in-depth study of the Marathi language, literature, and culture, while promoting, preserving, and enriching its history, traditions, and intellectual heritage. Initially, the department started with two faculty members offering the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programme. In 2012, the Master of Arts (M.A.) programme was introduced, providing students from rural backgrounds with greater opportunities for higher education. Since its inception, the department has consistently progressed and has built a rich legacy of producing socially responsible and accomplished graduates. Over the past four decades, it has made significant contributions to the fields of Marathi language and literature. Through various literary, research-oriented, academic, and cultural activities, the department has established a distinct identity across Maharashtra.
The department places special emphasis on student-centred teaching and knowledge creation. It possesses a rich collection of books and valuable reference materials and has consistently nurtured a strong reading culture among students. As a result, students of the department have achieved outstanding academic success, including winning two Gold Medals awarded by Savitribai Phule Pune University Pune for academic excellence. Many students have qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) and the State Eligibility Test (SET) and are serving as Assistant Professors in various colleges. Likewise, several alumni have earned Ph.D. degrees and have made notable contributions to research and literary writing.
The Department of Marathi remains committed to the preservation, promotion, and dissemination of the Marathi language, literature, and culture. It regularly organizes competitions such as elocution, essay writing, poetry recitation, and storytelling to enhance students' confidence, creativity, and communication skills. Over the years, many distinguished scholars, literary critics, guest speakers, and alumni have been associated with the department and have made valuable contributions to the advancement of Marathi language and literature. Through quality teaching, innovative research, and socially relevant extension activities, the Department of Marathi is firmly committed to carrying forward the rich legacy of knowledge and cultural heritage to future generations.
